About us
Hillsboro Pottery is a small woman-owned pottery
studio located between the rolling hills and
wineries surrounding historic Hillsboro, Virginia.
We started throwing pottery in 2019 and haven’t
put the clay down since. What began as periodic
evening classes in Washington, D.C. soon became
throwing pots in our apartment kitchen. When we
moved to Hillsboro to enjoy the wide open spaces,
that meant we could bust our studio space wide
open, too.
Ceramics is a lifelong learning process, and we
love to experiment with different clays, glazes, and
tools. Each of our pieces is one of a kind and
handmade. Our pots are wheel-thrown and we do
not use any molds to make our pieces.

At this time, we do not accept custom orders. We
are still refining our craft and the pressure of
custom orders is not something we’re taking on
right now.
-
It really depends. Pottery is a practice that requires
patience. Each piece undergoes many steps. Letting
clay dry slowly and evenly prevents warping and
cracks. The entire process usually takes several
weeks and exact timing depends on the temperature
and humidity of the studio environment.
-
Yes, we use lead-free glazes that are generally food
safe, oven safe, and dishwasher safe. Pieces with
luster glazes (e.g., gold, mother of pearl — the
extra shiny stuff) are the only pieces that are not
microwave safe.
